"...the well-chosen topics provide a highly readable, coherent introduction to enzyme chemistry."
Journal of Enzyme Inhibition and Medicinal Chemistry, 2005
"The first edition of this book was excellent and this new edition consolidates ‘Bugg’ as the pre-eminent textbook on the bioorganic aspects of chemical biology."
Chemistry World, May 2005
Book Description
Enzyme catalysis is a topic of fundamental importance in organic, bio-organic and medicinal chemistry. This new edition of a very popular textbook provides a concise introduction to the underlying principles and mechanisms of enzyme and coenzyme action from a chemical perspective.
Whilst retaining the overall structure of the first edition – preliminary chapters describe the basic principles of enzyme structure and catalysis moving through to detailed discussions of the major classes of enzyme processes in the later chapters – the book has been thoroughly updated to include information on the most recent advances in our understanding of enzyme action. A major feature of the second edition is the inclusion of two-colour figures of the active sites of enzymes discussed in the text, in order to illustrate the interplay between enzyme structure and function. Problems, with outline answers, at the end of each chapter give the student the chance to the check their understanding of the material.
As a concise but comprehensive account, Introduction to Enzyme and Coenzyme Chemistry will continue to prove invaluable to both undergraduate and postgraduate students of organic, bio-organic and medicinal chemistry.
Tim Bugg is professor of biological chemistry in the Department of Chemistry, University of Warwick, UK.

Book Description
Nutritional Biochemistry : takes
a scientific approach to nutrition. It covers not just
"whats"--nutritional requirements--but why they are required for human
health, by describing their function at the cellular and molecular
level. Each case study either leads to a subsequent discovery or
enables an understanding of the physiological mechanisms of action of
various nutrition-related processes. The text is "picture-oriented" and
the commentary is directed towards explaining graphs, figures, and
tables.
Nutritional Biochemistry : includes
a discussion of relevant aspects of physiology, food chemistry,
toxicology, pediatrics, and public health. Experimental techniques for
nutritional science are emphasized, and primary data is included to
help give students a feel for the nutrition literature. This
"real-world" approach provides students with a realistic view of the
basis for much of our understanding of nutritional biochemistry.* Integrates biochemistry and nutrition in a case-oriented method
* Emphasizes a hands-on approach to learning - case histories and clinical and research data illustrate all major points
* Places emphasis on metabolism - metabolic pathways, enzymology, nutrient requirements (including RDA values)
* Reveals the benefits of the Mediterranean diet, the biochemistry of
exercise, the cell signaling pathways, how nutrition can influence the
development of cancer, and the anthropometry and genetics of obesity.

Book Description
The
first edition of this book was published in 1985. The content of the
4th edition reflects the enormous advances that have occurred since
that time in the field of lipid biochemistry. This publication is
unique in that it represents a bridge between the superficial coverage
of the lipid field found in basic biochemistry text books and the
highly specialized material contained in scientific review articles and
monographs. The book is not a collection of exhaustive reviews, but a
current and readable summary of diverse aspects of lipids. It is
intended as an advanced and up-to-date textbook for teachers and
students who are familiar with the basic concepts of lipid biochemistry
and will also serve as a general reference book for scientists studying
lipids, lipoproteins and membranes.

Flavonoids: Chemistry, Biochemistry and Applications
by Oyvind M. Andersen
Book Description
Advances
in the flavonoid field have been nothing short of spectacular over the
last 20 years. While the medical field has noticed flavonoids for their
potential antioxidant, anticancer and cardioprotectant characteristics,
growers and processors in plant sciences have utilized flavonoid
biosynthesis and the genetic manipulation of the flavonoid pathway in
plants to improve the nutritional and ornamental value of crops.
Flavonoids: Chemistry, Biochemistry and Applications covers each class
of flavonoid and presents the historic advances made in flavonoid
research since the 1994 publication of an earlier text, Flavonoids
Advances in Research Since 1986. This book details the analytical
techniques scientists have used to achieve an improved understanding of
flavonoid structures and functions as well as advances in the genetic
manipulation of the flavonoid pathway, and the discovery of many new
flavonoids. It indicates which techniques are best suited for the
isolation and structure determination of flavonoids and whether the
structures are novel. While explaining how to evaluate the flavonoid
content in food and beverages, the book reveals the biotechnological
advances that have allowed nutritionists and plant physiologists to
assess the possible effects of flavonoids. As interest regarding the
impact and health benefits of flavonoids continues to grow, Flavonoids:
Chemistry, Biochemistry and Applications reflects the continuing
commitment of flavonoid researchers to the improvement of human health
and provides the most comprehensive, up-to-date source of information
for all known flavonoids.

retaining the overall structure of the first edition – preliminary
chapters describe the basic principles of enzyme structure and
catalysis moving through to detailed discussions of the major classes
of enzyme processes in the later chapters – the book has been
thoroughly updated to include information on the most recent advances
in our understanding of enzyme action. A major feature of the second
edition is the inclusion of two-colour figures of the active sites of
enzymes discussed in the text, in order to illustrate the interplay
between enzyme structure and function. Problems, with outline answers,
at the end of each chapter give the student the chance to the check
their understanding of the material.
As a concise but comprehensive account, Introduction to Enzyme and Coenzyme Chemistry
will continue to prove invaluable to both undergraduate and
postgraduate students of organic, bio-organic and medicinal chemistry.
Tim Bugg is professor of biological chemistry in the Department of Chemistry, University of Warwick, UK.

Enzyme Systems that Metabolise Drugs and Other Xenobiotics
(Current Toxicology)
(Hardcover)
by Costas Ioannides
Editorial Reviews
Review
"an invaluable reference book" (ISSX Newsletter, Summer 2002)
Book Description
This definitive reference work describes in detail the enzyme systems
that participate in the metabolism of xenobiotics, particularly
medicinal drugs. Each chapter focuses on a specific enzyme system,
emphasising its role in the activation and detoxication of chemicals.
Aspects discussed critically include:
* enzyme function in the metabolism and bioactivation of xenobiotics
* substrate specificity
* tissue distribution
* species distribution (to include laboratory animals and humans)
* hormonal regulation
* sex differences
* modulation by prior exposure to other chemicals
* age-dependent expression
* pharmacogenetics and modulation by disease.
Enzyme Systems that Metabolise Drugs and Other Xenobiotics will be
essential reading for industrial research scientists working in the
fine chemicals and pharmaceutical industries, especially those
concerned with the safety evaluation of chemicals, and investigating
their metabolism, pharmacokinetic characteristics and toxicological
properties. The nature and scope of the book will also make it
attractive to the research toxicologist and to postgraduate students
studying toxicology, as well as to clinicians and pharmacists.

Enzymes and Their Inhibitors
(Hardcover)
by H. John Smith (Editor), Claire Simons
Editorial Reviews
Review
value as a focused reference text for graduate students in pharmacology
and enzymology. The various subjects are covered clearly and
conciselywith adequate referencing, which should allow students to
quickly obtain a broad overview of concepts in enzyme inhibitor
development, and also to provide a window into more extensive
literature in this area.
Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, 2005, volume 48
Book Description
In recent years the number of new drugs described as enzyme inhibitors
has increased significantly. Once an enzyme target is selected or
discovered for a particular disease or infection, detailed information
must be compiled for the rational design of an inhibitor. Until now, a
single handbook containing that crucial background information has not
been available. Covering everything you need to know about this complex
subject, Enzymes and Their Inhibition examines enzyme inhibition in
detail, and describes the design and development of such inhibitors.
Focusing on the development of enzyme inhibitors as therapeutic drugs,
Enzymes and Their Inhibition provides an overview of the chemistry of
major types of enzymes and their inhibitors. The opening chapters
introduce readers to the structure, substrates, kinetics, and
mechanisms of enzymes. Subsequent chapters discuss various types of
enzyme inhibitors and the principles involved in developing them into
effective drugs. Enzymes and Their Inhibition describes the problems
that can be encountered in translating results from the bench to the
market place, and suggests approaches that circumvent these
difficulties. This outstanding text for students in pharmacology and
medicinal chemistry is also a valuable professional reference.

Guide to Biomolecular Simulations
ISBN: 1402035861
Title: Guide to Biomolecular Simulations (Focus on Structural Biology)
Author: Oren M. Becker Martin Karplus
Publisher: Springer
Publication Date: 2005-12-22
Number Of Pages: 220
Product Description
Molecular
dynamics simulations have become instrumental in replacing our view of
proteins as relatively rigid structures with the realization that they
were dynamic systems, whose internal motions play a functional role.
Over the years, such simulations have become a central part of
biophysics. Applications of molecular dynamics in biophysics range over
many areas. They are used in the structure determination of
macromolecules with x-ray and NMR data, the modelling of unknown
structures from their sequence, the study of enzyme mechanisms, the
estimation of ligand-binding free energies, the evaluation of the role
of conformational change in protein function, and drug design for
targets of known structures.
The widespread application of molecular dynamics and related
methodologies suggests that it would be useful to have available an
introductory self-contained course by which students with a relatively
limited background in chemistry, biology and computer literacy, can
learn the fundamentals of the field. This Guide to Biomolecular Simulations tries to fill this need. The Guide
consists of six chapters which provide the fundamentals of the field
and six chapters which introduce the reader to more specialized but
important applications of the methodology.
